GDS stands for Global Distribution System, it is a worldwide network where travel agencies and companies can book hotels, flights and rental cars. There are several GDS systems of which Amadeus, Sabre and Travelport (Galileo, Worldspan and Apollo) are the most well-known. The GDS works on a commission per booking basis, sometimes fixed fees also apply.

A GDS connector is a system that allows hotels to connect to the Global Distribution System (GDS). An intermediary party is always needed to make this possible. In the GDS connector a description of the hotel and its rooms can be placed, as well as pictures of the hotel. Subsequently, the prices and availability of the hotel can be loaded into the system, after which the hotel becomes bookable in the GDS.

The big advantage of the GDS connector is that the hotel information only needs to be placed on one central location and then it can be used in all GDS systems. It is also possible to connect the GDS connector to a channel manager, in this way, the prices and availability of the hotel are automatically updated in the GDS connector, which then sends them to the different GDS systems that the hotel works with. Finally, the GDS offers the possibility to book hotel rooms at predefined rates, which is useful for hotels that often receive business guests from large corporate companies.
